The Northern Territory is vast but is home to so few. The lifestyle in this part of Australia is not for the fainthearted. Many English find the weather too hot and humid. But if you are looking for a GP job in NT and some outback adventure on your days off, it doesn’t get better.
The state offers some of Australia’s most iconic natural geological wonders and ancient landscapes: Uluru (Ayres Rock) and nearby town of Alice Springs; Kakadu – a world heritage site with rocky gorges, thundering waterfalls, lush rainforests, wetlands, exotic wildlife and ancient rock art; the towering red rock cliffs of Kings Canyon through which you can trek and camp; the huge red rock domes of the Olgas; desert and much, much more.
Or you can be civilised and watch the landscape pass by from the luxury compartment on the famous Ghan train which runs between Darwin and Adelaide.
Whilst the NT is not often the first choice for those relocating to Australia, GP jobs in Darwin and NT are arguably a good bet. There are DPA jobs a plenty, and there’s the chance to shave years off your moratorium.
Formerly a frontier outpost, Darwin has now become a sizeable city with all the modern conveniences and plenty of luxury. It is wealthy – it has the highest median salary of all cities in Australia – and is home to more than 100 nationalities including the Australian indigenous population which makes for a city also rich in culture.
All that said, there is still a sense that it sits uneasily on the edge of the vast and lonely Australian outback. If you’re looking for a GP job in Darwin and you have a bit of the pioneer spirit, then the lifestyle opportunities will be a great fit!
Whilst it is not inconceivable that a UK GP could take a job in some remoter region of the territory, most GP jobs are in Darwin. The lifestyle in the city is comfortable and modern – everywhere is air-conditioned. GPs working here will find this affluent, vibrant, multicultural city, rich in culture, food and lifestyle opportunities.
And when you are not working, there is much to explore nearby in the world heritage national park, and for weekends off, you can do some serious exploring, camping or glamping, in Northern Territory’s truly phenomenal landscape.
